4017 Enacted

In the year 4017, how might identity and territories be transformed by advances in artificial intelligence? What if multiple data streams could define citizenship, or if Europe itself ceased to be a fixed continent and became a land mass with borders changing daily according to data flows? This project has worked with secondary school groups to imagine the future of European identity through the lens of developing technologies and our current socio-political landscape. Presented as an alternative museum tour, outcomes of the school workshops and the artist’s research form the basis for immersive performances around the V&A.

Part of the Collecting Europe Festival a project by the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Goethe Institute London

Onkar Kular is Professor of Design Interventions at HDK, Gothenburg University. His work examines how contemporary design practice can be used to raise critical questions in relation to culture, society and politics.

Common Initiative is a collective of four designers: Rike Glaser, Thomas Marriott, Adi Zaffran, Namuun Zimmermann- interested in the social, cultural and political role of design and ask if it can function as a form of ‚activated journalism’ to unpick and present new ways of understanding a range of contemporary phenomena.
